Wiccas do not subscribe to what most people would see as a common sense
scientific understanding of reality. They have rejected the authority of
scriptures and the hierarchy of organized religions. They are generally
uncomfortable with any kind of orthodoxy.
Environmentalists have recently come to realize that organized religions have failed to respect the diversity of natural life upon which our ecosystem is based. Wiccas see the earth, heavenly bodies, humanity, and nature in all their diversity as manifestations of divinity.
The ethical code of the craft is a very simple one, and it reflects an absence of universal objective values in a tolerant and individualistic attitude. It consists of just eight words: Do what you will, if it harms none. Many Wiccas pointed out that a respect for all nature in that its admonition of harming none includes both people and other living things. To a Wicca, all things are living since there is no distinction between animate and inanimate nature. Wiccas believe that the divine spark of life permeates everything.
Wiccas also believe that their moral code is not one of licence, but of responsibility. It requires an individual to act in accordance with his or her true nature and to take account of the consequences of all acts.
The Goddess told her followers: All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.
Wiccas believe in the ancient theory of correspondence between what is within the human mind and what is outside in nature and the cosmos. They believe that a form of energy, sometimes called the ether, permeates all life. This is the energy that people use to connect with one another on an emotional or psychic plane. The same energy is seen in the influence of the moon on the tides and the menstrual cycles of women. The strength of the sun's rays, the seasons of the year, and the fertility of the earth are seen as manifestations of the same energy. Magic is a system for tapping into this energy and manipulating it in order to change one's own consciousness or the external events.
The unity of mankind with the natural world is represented in the primary sacred symbol of the craft, the pentagram. The pentacle a pentagram with a circle around it is the protection for Wiccas.
We were the first ecologists. We believe in the law of threefold return: What you have taken from the earth you give back three times. A lot of people have become disillusioned with what they term patriarchal religion. Wicca's have become greatly influenced by ancient mythology and a love of nature. Wiccas demand that you be responsible for your own decisions, responsible for how you live -- no one is telling you. What Wiccas call magic could also be described as prayer, therapy, meditation, creative energy, or optimism. The important thing for them is that it works and helps them transform their lives.
Magic is for knowing yourself, knowing your environment. It is not for
pretty tools that cost lots of money. Tools are props. If the trained mind
and heart is with you, it works. For some people the craft is an expression
of their rebellion against the mainstream society and culture, or a spiritual
vehicle for social change. For others, it is a private religion and a way
of life that can coexist quite comfortably in any society that allows it
to do so.
Wiccas have an uninhibited approach to sexuality in their everyday lives. Sex is natural and holy, and that is something that most people in our culture are not able to understand and respect. Wiccas do not have a concept of sin and they believe that, in order to act wisely and use magical powers well, one has to have a clear understanding of the nature of the universe and one's role in it. The Craft is rich with unspeakable secrets and mysteries well guarded by the fact that they cannot be expressed in words to those who are unready, so they will not be able to understand.
All the information I have been drawn to my entire life and that felt good and right turned out to all be connected.
All Wiccas believe the earth is sacred. The female principle in the self and the universe is as least as important as, if not more important than, than the male. Wiccas all agree that the psychic energy within the individual is one with the force that governs all life.
In a quest to find the Wicca one would expect to encounter some bizarre people but simple and domestic is what you will often find. Wiccas feel free to create new versions of the craft. They are feminists, ecologists, and political activists who found the craft in a quest for a spiritual dimension to their beliefs. They identify with symbols of the craft, but interpret them in new ways. They often draw more on their own energy and experience than on traditional beliefs and practices. I find if given the opportunity the Wicca's can come up with as many interpretations as there are stars in the sky. A survey found the most common occupations among Wiccas was in computer technology. People who become Wiccas do so because they have discovered a religion for themselves. Many people said discovering Wicca's set of beliefs correspond to the way they have always felt. This would explain that they now realized that they had always been Wiccas, but had not come to realize that until later in life.
The most important thing in my life, in the same way as the ground is what I need to walk on -- background and foreground at the same time. Being a Wicca is who I am as well as what I do.
The ancients understood the earth, and that we as humans are only a part of the earth. That whatever we do to the earth we do to ourselves. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. It appears many humans have simply forgotten how to use their intuition and have narrowed their consciousness to such a degree that they no longer are even aware of their intuitive powers. If humans get caught up in the trivialities of every day life, they suffer from subconscious hypertension. If worry remains in the back of their minds permanently, they will become depressed and it will eat up all their vitality.
In order to live a healthy life, one must relax and grasp the deeper level of meaning. It is always there, but one must be able to tune into it. When stagnation occurs an excessive degree of self consciousness is created, hence the getting caught up in everydayness. If a person is not given a holiday from everydayness, their creativity takes the form of increasing resentment against that life that imprisons them. What they must understand is that they have imprisoned themselves with the way they think. The human mind was meant to take wings and escape the mere present moment and soar as it were. The human will needs aims and desires to stimulate it.
We must strive to live an ordinary life, but with one difference: in a non-ordinary way. Wiccas realize that human beings are still partly animal. We are tied down to the present moment, but we have a remarkable capacity that is not possessed by any other animal: our minds can take flight and the journey is known as imagination. Our minds crave stimulation as our lungs crave oxygen. When the mind is denied release from its everydayness, it is as painful as an extremely full bladder. The active creative expression it seeks will turn to any powerful stimulus, no matter how terrifying or negative.
We need only read the headlines in our local newspapers or watch our local TV stations as each morning is born amidst unspeakable horrors or superhuman acts of heroism. Human history is the history of childness, of silly quarrels for small reasons. The Ancient people had one thing that is apparently lacking in present day thinking and that is long range vision. We have one thing in common each and everyone of us. We are all members of the Planet Earth. That we can not deny.
The powers of the mind have yet to be discovered. One thing I know is true and that is all things are possible with the right attitude. I have learned that great sorrow may be returned as great joy. I was forced to give two children away at birth. My great sorrow became another's joy; a young unwed mother's sorrow was turned into another couple's joy. Now at a later point in my life that great wound has been healed with a mother and child reunion, not once but twice. I share my life with the sweetest creature I have had to fortune to cross paths with. She is a thirteen pound Jack Russell Terrier named Kynna. Her unconditional, never-quavering love gives me hope. I pray that there comes a day that each and every one of us will open our minds to the endless possibilities that lie at our very fingertips. For a Wicca, the quest of knowledge is a life long quest. For in order to be knowledgable, we must first accept how very little we indeed know.
I have always, through my life, found great peace from music. The lyrics are never forgotten -- I need only hear a few beginning bars. I think the Moody Blues pretty well summed it up when they sang these words: I have dreams enough for one and I've got love enough for three, I have my hopes to comfort me, I got my new horizons out to see, but I'm never going to lose your precious gift it will always be that way, cause I know I'm going to find my peace of mind some day.
The key to youthfulness is attitude and staying physically fit. We are what we eat, breathe, drink, and see. We are each an absolute individual, but the Wiccas understand that we are also born from matter that once was one force. Life has never possessed positive purpose, only the negative one of staying alive and avoiding pain. With the development of art, science and philosophy, man has acquired a positive purpose, a purpose towards which he can drive forward -- not be driven from behind. If a positive purpose could be established as the human driving force, it would be a turning point in evolution, for it is many times stronger than the negative purpose of avoiding pain.
Cyberspace is the perfect ground to establish a positive purpose. The soil has been richly laid and is awaiting each new seed of information. The world is beautiful in its great diversity. With this new form of information sharing, all things could be possible, even World Peace. I feel fortunate to be alive at a time when we can all participate in this new and exciting form of communication. I have always felt compelled to share my knowledge with those willing to listen. At the same time, I am no stranger to a good book, movie or song.
