I have seen everything now. My JRTs have always been hunting fools, but my little male Bobby who is now 9 months old, has now killed two possums.
The first was surprised in some tall grass just after dusk. Bobby
grabbed him by the neck and the possum immediately played dead. Bobby
then shook really hard followed by a true finishing blow by our "caesar
dog", my wife's pit bull mix after which the poor possum made some
bicycling movements then stopped breathing. The second was pretty exciting. I had been showing him holes since he was little, most he would give just a sniff and leave (as you wrote about, I think). Others he would go in then come right back out, excepting the badger holes with tenants in, which I now know was insane. This hole was just big enough for him to fit in the opening. He stuck his nose in and then shot right on in out of sight followed by barking and growling. He backed out, kind of looked at me as if if checking that I was still tere, then disappeared again. He started barking and growling and then I heard something else growling in there with him! OH MY GOD! It scared me good, I'll tell you. The funny thing is that this is exactly what I had been looking forward to for months after reading Plummer and the like. Of course I didn't have the locator collar on, but I began to dig in the direction of the commotion. Pretty quick I had dug back to a furry body blocking the way. The possum whirled its head out growling and struggling. My little female Lily then figured out what was going on and began to bark like crazy which turned the possum back in the hole - to finish off Bobby I figured. So I took Lily off to the side and the possum stuck his head out again still struggling to get out of the hole. I then figured out that not only was Bobby still living, but firmly attached to the possum's backside. I don't really understand how he got behind the possum, I guess the possum was just trying to get the hell out of there and squeezed by. I then got a stick and kind of poked at the possum who bit the stick allowing me to pull both of them out of the hole. Bobby released and then before I could grab him, he attacked the injured possum (he was wounded badly above the tail) behind his head and shoul hard. I heard a crunching noise and that was it for the possum. Bobby looked fine, except for a bloody mouth. On exam, he had no injuries to be found. I was completely amazed and just looked at this little dog who had just taken this creature bigger than himself underground with barely enough room to move. I have seen everything now.
