Breeds and Venues

Hi! I'm new to this sport... though I've done obedience, agility and flyball for years. I got a Danish Swedish Farmdog last year and I'm looking for a venue I can do Go To Ground with him.

They are an FCI breed, mostly in Denmark and Sweden. They are out of some Terriers but have different personalities than the typical terrier. But they are ratters and I'd love to get my dog into some tunnels. I have friend here in Utah that have tunnels I can train him with.

Anyway... does ATWA have to approve breeds to compete? Are there other venues I could consider? There are only about 150 DSF in the USA now but the numbers are growing. They are not an AKC breed yet either. But they are a UKC breed... but I didn't see any GTG in UKC.

Thanks!

SFBay Opps for Rat Hunting

Thanks to a school dumpster sitting on my back fence line, I have a perfect opportunity for a little terrier training. My dog is a herder, not a terrier, so she won't chase or catch these little guys, but I am wondering if anyone else is interested in exercising their dogs to help out? If interested, please respond online or email me directly if a link is available.

Thanks,

RE: Getting dog off coons

DO NOT twist or turn the break stick in the dogs mouth. You WILL break teeth, and cause damage to the dog.

The break stick should be used to keep your dog from fully biting down. NOT prying it's mouth apart.

The right method...

Pull the break stick to the very back molars of the dogs mouth.

Cause the dog to re-grip the quarry with it's mouth. I do this by plugging the nose, or blowing into the nose.

While it's re-gripping the quarry, pull the break stick further back in it's mouth. It will prevent the dog from fully biting down.

If you use a break stick I recommend making one yourself. Making it about half the width of a normal stick. Break sticks are made for large game dogs, and not terriers.

Needing advice and assistance

I leave in Kansas City, MO and I have a terrier mix that I would love to start hunting. He is a little over a year old. He got a little too big to do earth work (he stands at 16" tall) but I'm pretty sure with his prey drive and speed he would be wonderful for above ground work. The thing is I don't really have any idea how to get started, where to go, etc. Any advice and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
